Markham, West New Brighton, N.Y., writes to a friend, 1915 January 27, concerning a lecture tour, the Panama-Pacific Exposition Committee, a book of verse by the friend's husband, and the friend's desire to model Markham's face as she has done Joaquin Miller. Markham writes to Ida E. Roger, 1927 March 1, declining a speaking engagement and offering printed copies of two of his poems.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
